Colonial Past

Although Singapore's history dates from the 11th century, the island was little known to the West until the 19th century, when in 1819, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles arrived as an agent of the British East India Company. In 1824, the British purchased Singapore Island, and by 1825, the city of Singapore had become a major port, with trade exceeding that of Malaya's Malacca and Penang combined. In 1826, Singapore, Penang, and Malacca were combined as the Straits Settlements to form an outlying residency of the British East India Company; in 1867, the Straits Settlements were made a British Crown Colony, an arrangement that continued until 1946.

The Singapore Flyer is currently the tallest Ferris wheel in the world. Described by its operators as an observation wheel[1], it reaches 42 stories high, with a total height of 165 m (541 ft), and is 5 m (16 ft) taller than the Star of Nanchang and 30 m (98 ft) taller than the London Eye.

Located in Singapore, on the southeast tip of the Marina Centre reclaimed land, it comprises a 150 m (492 ft) diameter wheel, built over a three-story terminal building which houses shops, bars and restaurants, and offers broad views of the city centre and beyond to about 45 km (28 mi), including the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan, as well as Johor, Malaysia.

Singapore Changi Airport is one of major aviation hubs in Southeast Asian region. Since its opening in 1981, the airport has made its mark in the aviation industry as a benchmark for service excellence, winning over 250 awards up to 2006. Changi Airport's efforts to counter the onset of age include periodic physical upgrades to its existing terminals, building of new facilities and taking steps to provide a high level of customer service.

Being a former SQ girl, this is one place that I frequent alot, and one that i have fond memories of.

This fishing village is right beside the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) train line, sometimes it can be quite noisy, but the fishes in the area are used to it.

Fullerton Hotel

The grey Aberdeen granite Fullerton Building is located near the mouth of the Singapore River, in the Downtown Core of Central Area, Singapore. The building has Neo-classical architectural features which include fluted Doric colonnades on their heavy base, and the lofty portico over the main entrance with trophy designs and the Royal Coat of Arms, crafted by Italian Cavalieri Rodolfo Nolli.

The Fullerton building is now a five-star boutique hotel - Fullerton Hotel. The Fullerton Hotel Singapore has 400 rooms and suites which either overlook the atrium courtyard, or face downtown Singapore's skyline, the Singapore River promenade or the Marina Bay. The Fullerton Hotel Singapore has won major travel awards such as the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List award and the hotel received an architectural heritage award from the Urban Redevelopment Authority Singapore for its successful restoration of the former Fullerton Building.

Stamford Raffles: Landing Site

Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles was the founder of the Republic of Singapore, and is one of the most famous Britons who expanded the British Empire.

The Raffles' Landing Site is denoted by a statue of Sir Stamford Raffles, and is located on the north bank of the Singapore River. The site is located within the Civic District, in the Downtown Core of the Central Area, Singapore's central business district.

The Parliament House of Singapore is a public building and cultural landmark and houses the Parliament of Singapore. It is located in the Civic District of the Downtown Core within Singapore's central business district (the Central Area). Within its vicinity is Raffles Place, which lies across it from the Singapore River, and the Supreme Court's building across the road. The building was designed to represent a contemporary architectural expression of stateliness and authority.

Chinatown

Singapore's Chinatown is an ethnic neighbourhood featuring distinctly Chinese cultural elements and a historically concentrated ethnic Chinese population. The street architecture of Chinatown's buildings, the shophouses especially, combine different elements of baroque architecture and Victorian architecture and do not have a single classification. Many of them were built in the style of painted ladies, and have been restored in that fashion. These styles result in a variety of different colours of which pastel is most dominant.

Merlion

The merlion is a statue with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Its name comes from a portmanteau of mermaid and lion. The lion head and fish body of the creature recalls the story of the legendary Sang Nila Utama, who saw a lion while hunting on an island, en route to Malacca. The island eventually became the sea port of Temasek, a precursor to Singapore.
